Applying Nature's Design: Corridors as a Strategy for by Anthony Anderson, Clinton N. Jenkins

By Anthony Anderson, Clinton N. Jenkins

The fragmenting of habitats is endangering animal populations and degrading or destroying many plant populations during the global. to handle this challenge, conservationists have more and more became to organic corridors, parts of land put aside to facilitate the circulation of species and ecological approaches. even if, whereas enormous quantities of hall projects are less than approach around the world, there's little useful info to steer their layout, situation, and administration. Applying Nature's Design deals a complete review of present wisdom on corridors, their layout, and their implementation. Anthony B. Anderson and Clinton N. Jenkins research a number of conceptual and sensible concerns linked to corridors and supply distinct case stories from world wide. Their paintings considers the way to deal with and govern corridors, how you can construct help between a number of curiosity teams for corridors, and the stumbling blocks to implementation. as well as assessing a number of environmental and ecological demanding situations, the authors are the 1st to think about the significance of socioeconomic and political concerns in growing and preserving corridors.

Instead, corridor research needs to focus on the details of particular species and scales relevant to conservation practice (Noss and Beier 2000). Solid experimental research on the values of corridors is still lacking. As mentioned above, virtually all experimental research has focused on behavioral and population responses of specific animals. Scientists have not explored the community- or ecosystem-level effects of corridors on such factors as disturbance, exotic species invasions, predation, and species richness (Beier and Noss 1998).

Environmental factors are likely to change in different magnitudes and in different directions as climate changes. Since different environmental factors limit the distributions of different species, there may be a need for multiple corridors. These would allow all species in an ecosystem to shift their distributions to new, suitable locations. Source: Hobbs and Hopkins 1991. connectivity, and habitat quality (Thorne 1993). Width determines how much of the corridor interior is exposed to disturbances or edge effects, whether natural or human-induced, from the surrounding matrix.

Roads are most likely to benefit wildlife movement when they receive light use and include a broad swath of intact habitat on either side (Bennett 1991). The potential for roadways to serve as biological corridors is limited, however, by hazards that also make roads formidable barriers to wildlife movement. Roads attract some animals, which can then experience high roadkill mortality. Roadkill is the leading cause of death for several large mammal species in Florida, including Florida panthers, black bears, and Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) (Harris and Gallagher 1989).
