Two references are quoted for the discovery of the peculiar new particle with an electric charge three times that of the electron. One is by a group of leading physicists at the University of California; the second is by a group from the Weizmann Institute, analyzing data taken at the European CERN accelerator in Switzerland. There is also a reference to a 1964 paper by Harari and myself, discussing how particles with a charge three times that of the electron could be fit into the old unification scheme.

But Andrei was no longer with us. The Jerusalem ceremony was a unique occasion honoring Sakharov. He will be given many honors by people and organizations all over the world who recognize his greatness and struggle for human rights. The Jerusalem ceremony was different. The people there were also giving a very personal message of thanks to Sakharov for his help and support in their own individual struggles for freedom and the right to leave the Soviet Union. They were now free and living new lives and wanted to thank Sakharov for his hard work in their behalf.

There were even jokes about Prof. Edward Anti-Teller who worked in an anti-laboratory on an anti-planet where all of the theories of physics were developed by anti-semites. But all the astronomical observations failed to find any trace of antimatter. All other astrophysical observations favored this theory of the origin of the universe in which everything started with a “big bang” that created equal amounts of matter and antimatter. But there was no known mechanism for getting rid of all this antimatter.
